How to Open ZIP, RAR and 7z Files Downloaded from TeraBox
Quick answer: Extract ZIP with right-click Extract All on Windows, double-click on Mac, or Files on Android and iPhone. For RAR and 7z use 7-Zip, Keka, The Unarchiver, ZArchiver or Documents. For multi-part files, put all parts in one folder and open the first part.

Cloud folders are full of archives: a ZIP with a hundred photos, a RAR with a project, a multi-part 7z that someone split into ten pieces so it would fit a size limit. After you save one from a share link, the next question is always the same: how do I open this? This guide explains how to open ZIP, RAR and 7z files downloaded from TeraBox on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, how to join multi-part archives, what to do with passwords, and how to repair the most common "archive is corrupt" errors. If you have not downloaded the file yet, paste the share link into the TeraBox downloader first and come back here.
What are ZIP, RAR and 7z?
All three are archive formats: they pack many files into one, usually compressing them to save space. Owners use them on TeraBox because it is easier to share one file than a folder with hundreds of items, and because the archive keeps the folder structure intact.
| Format | Typical extension | Opens natively on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZIP | .zip | Windows, Mac, Android (Files), iPhone (Files) | Most compatible format |
| RAR | .rar, .part1.rar | Windows 11 (recent updates), needs an app elsewhere | Common for large, split archives |
| 7z | .7z, .7z.001 | Windows 11 (recent updates), needs an app elsewhere | Best compression, free 7-Zip tool |
| TAR / GZ | .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz | Mac, Linux, Windows 11 | Common on developer files |
The file extension is the quickest way to know what you have. If the name ends in something odd such as .001, .z01 or .part2.rar, you are looking at one piece of a split archive; skip ahead to the multi-part section.
First: make sure the download is complete
Most "cannot open archive" problems are really incomplete downloads. Before you install anything, compare the size of the file on your device with the size shown in the downloader. If your file is smaller, the download stopped early. Follow how to resume a failed TeraBox download or download again with a manager such as IDM or 1DM (guide). Our companion article on verifying a TeraBox download shows how to check size and hashes properly.
Windows: ZIP, RAR and 7z
- Open File Explorer and find the file in Downloads.
- For ZIP: right-click → Extract All… → choose a folder → Extract.
- For RAR and 7z on a fully updated Windows 11, the same right-click menu works. On Windows 10 or an older build, install the free 7-Zip (7-zip.org) or PeaZip.
- With 7-Zip installed, right-click the archive → 7-Zip → Extract to "name\". This creates a new folder named after the archive and avoids spilling hundreds of files into Downloads.
Tip: always extract into a new folder, not Downloads or the Desktop. If the archive contains a thousand loose files you will thank yourself later.
Mac: ZIP, RAR and 7z
- ZIP: double-click the file. macOS Archive Utility creates a folder next to it.
- RAR and 7z: macOS cannot open these without help. Install The Unarchiver or Keka from the Mac App Store or their official sites, then double-click the archive.
- If a ZIP created on Windows shows strange characters in file names, open it with Keka instead of Archive Utility; it handles different encodings better.
Android: ZIP, RAR and 7z
- Open the Files app (Files by Google or your phone's My Files), go to Downloads, and tap the archive.
- For ZIP, Files shows Extract. Tap it and choose where to save.
- For RAR and 7z, install a free extractor such as ZArchiver or the official RAR app from Google Play, then open the archive from within it. Always install apps from the Play Store, never from a random APK site; our TeraBox APK guide explains why that matters.
- If the extracted photos or videos do not appear in your Gallery, move them to DCIM or Movies. The save to Gallery guide shows how.
iPhone and iPad: ZIP, RAR and 7z
- ZIP: open the Files app → Downloads, then tap the ZIP. iOS unpacks it into a folder next to the archive.
- RAR and 7z: iOS does not extract these on its own. Use a trusted free app such as Documents by Readdle or iZip, open the archive with "Share → Open in…", then extract.
- Videos can be saved to Photos from Files with Share → Save Video. See TeraBox on iPhone and Android for the full flow.
Multi-part archives (.part1.rar, .001, .z01)
Large files are often split into pieces so each piece fits a size limit. You need all parts, in the same folder, before extraction works.
- Download every part from the share link. A folder download is easiest with the folder downloader; see also how to download a whole TeraBox folder.
- Put all parts in one folder and do not rename them.
- Open only the first part:
name.part1.rarfor RAR,name.7z.001for 7z, orname.zip(withname.z01,name.z02) for split ZIP. The extractor reads the others automatically. - If extraction stops at a certain percentage, one part is missing or damaged. Check each part's size against the original listing.
Do not try to "merge" parts by editing or renaming them. The extractor does the joining.
Archives with a password
Some owners protect archives with their own password. That is separate from the TeraBox extraction code, which only unlocks the share link (how extraction codes work). The archive password should come from whoever shared the file, often in the post or message next to the link. We cannot recover or bypass passwords, and neither should you try: if you do not have the password, ask the owner.
Fixing "archive is corrupt", "unexpected end of archive" and CRC errors
- Unexpected end of archive: the file is incomplete. Download again or resume it.
- CRC failed / data error: one or more bytes were damaged in transit. Download the file again. If the same error appears, the original upload may be broken, so contact the owner.
- Cannot open file as archive: the extension may be wrong, or the file is actually a web page saved by mistake (a few kilobytes in size). Re-copy the link, avoid ad pages, and download via the downloader.
- Missing volume: a multi-part archive lacks one piece. Download every part.
- Very slow extraction: large archives with thousands of small files are slow on phones. Extract on a PC if you can.
Stay safe with archives
Archives are a popular way to hide malicious files because many scanners skip content inside them. Before you open anything:
- Only open archives from people you trust, and never run
.exe,.bat,.scr,.jsor.apkfiles you did not expect. - Scan the extracted files with Microsoft Defender, Malwarebytes or your phone's built-in protection.
- Be suspicious of "password.txt" tricks and archives promising cracked software, free premium accounts or game cheats. Our safe downloader checklist and is TeraBox safe? go deeper.
- Keep your system and extractor up to date; old versions of archive tools have had security bugs.
Quick fix checklist
- File size matches the one in the downloader.
- Extension identifies the format (ZIP, RAR, 7z).
- Right tool installed (built-in, 7-Zip, Keka or ZArchiver).
- All parts in one folder, starting with part 1.
- You have the archive password if one is required.
- Extracted files scanned before you open them.
If all six boxes are ticked and the archive still fails, the problem is almost certainly with the original upload, not with your device.
More questions
Why can I not open a RAR file on my Mac or iPhone?
macOS and iOS do not extract RAR or 7z natively. Install The Unarchiver or Keka on Mac, or a trusted app such as Documents by Readdle on iPhone.
What do I do with a .001 or .part1.rar file?
Download every part into one folder and open only the first part. The extractor reads the others automatically.
Is the TeraBox extraction code the same as the archive password?
No. The extraction code unlocks the share link. An archive password is set by the file owner and must come from them.
Why does it say the archive is corrupt?
Usually the download is incomplete or a part is missing. Compare the file size with the one in the downloader and download again.
